If you read this the you will know that I am using a toon shader so a lot of the things in this image dont have this applied yet because either there not textured yet. Just using normal materials to get a feel for how the image looks and works together ill get the rest of this scene animated just wanted to get started on texturing this stuff to get ready for the showreel hand in oh yeah that cube on the left is a place holder same with the thing on the table

Ive reached a bit of a stand still with this scene Ill leave it and come back to it. Need some crits on this because I am not the most skilled animator so onto the next scene. Focus on her face as she is kinda waking up.

Guess as I keep working on the animation I am going to upload my playblasts so you can see the progress I am making between uploads. There wont appear to be much progress between uploads but ill try not to make so many.

Got the legs sort of done still some tweaking to be done. Arms are blocked in.

Oh and Ill need to fix my weights again but its better to have some movement to actually see where those problem areas actually are.

Started the animation Finally. Still very rough just going to work on this first scene for a day or so and see what progress I have made and then figure out how much ill be able to get done in the next 5 weeks. I havent bothered to animate this part fully yet and there is still the hypershade curves to mess around with to get some ease in and outs.

Just noticed how strange my model looks without the hair.......LOL

Anyways got most of the face set up just a few weights that need some attention but i could ignore them until i start the animation and try to spot them from the test renders.

I've made some more improvements to the rig. Ive added more controls to the head for rotation and movement parented all the nurbs to the root and I've also renamed every part of so that things aren't so confusing. Next today ill get the fist roll done and set up the driven keys for the leg muscles and the arms. 4pm now so I should get this done by the tonight.

Ok so this is the latest Rig that I've been working on all night. The things that I have added to the Riga are.
Facial Controls= eyes,eyebrows,cheeks,jawbone and mouth.
Muscles= Bicep,Quads and Calf
Bones= Knee and Elbow.
Hair= Ive added a bone to the front of the hair so that it can be animated.

Fixed the Spine. Created a bunch of controls still need to create there driven keys like the fist controls and so on.

Weights still need to be painted on all of these new controls but that wont take too long as for some reason my model seems to move really well after deleting the history I had forgotten about so weight painting takes like a few mins.

I also opened up the mouth so that you can see her teeth.

Not sure but i might add some controls to the skirt and the top if i have time but they don't really need them.

Tested the facial controls. There far more creative than the blendshapes that i had

Its now 2am dont know if I should just finish up for the night and get at it early tomorrow or power on through the night and get it all finished...............NAh sleep is good.

Ok this might seem rather bright but this is how my stuff looks like before it looks like this so just ignore the colours going to mess around with arranging objects in the scene to help direct the eye along the path into the distance so far its kinda focused at that cliff edge area which is where it should be but there isn't much in the foreground that's interesting so ill change this. The rest of the environment still isn't finished bare with me.

Camera set up

Messed around with the stereo rig in Maya this morning as there was a problem with animating the camera along a path which is quite important when making an animation in Maya. However, I have come up with the solution to this problem. Because the camera is made up of 3 cameras in the rig this means that the attributes are already linked together so just simply trying to animate along a path cant work so what i have done is simple I've made a nurb controller for the camera which is then parented to the camera rig so the camera follows the nurb and the nurb follows the path so problem solved.

Been working on this quite a bit today haven't got as far as I would like because I ran into a computer problem which has taken up a lot of my time today. Shake fist at PC. Still need textures and I think i might just make this one scene but actually takes up 2/3 scenes the street scene the inside of flat and outside the window. Need to model the next 2 floors and the building to the left and to the right of the building and then some things for the street like lamp post and cars maybe. The interior of the flat will be simple has a TV couches and a table ill fill the room with other junk if i have time as there isn't going o be much of the animation at this part iam not going to spend too much time on this area in terms of models unless i have time instead ill use interesting textures and layout of the room and lighting to make the initial scene interesting.

The most problematic scene will be the one with all the trees as the model i have for the tree is going to cause rendering time to be slow it might be a pain.

Get the basic models for the scenes done I have 4/5 left to do. = around about 4 or 5 days hard work to do this.

Blendshapes a days work

Rigging could take up to a week if things don't work out too well.

Dissertation 2 days a week until the end but spend 2 weeks before the hand in making sure its ok. so this = 4/5 weeks totally but spread over time.

Animation. I stated in my planning that it would take me a day to animate 3seconds of animation so 3 weeks that should get majority of the animation done.

Testing of the animation. 1 or 2 weeks.

So i have 10 weeks left and in totally I am calculating that it will take me 7 weeks to get to the finish of my project i feel like this is possible.

Ok ill explain this hypershade basically the texture is a combination of 2 black and white textures which are then used to determine which texture map ie rock grass and mud will show through. This is done by using a layered texture withing Maya and then I use a ramp value coming out of the texture to then attach its self to the colours on the 3 tone shader to give it a cell shaded look I then need to create a contour line shader to really get the cell shaded look but ill have a bit more of a mess with the layered texture to see what i can actually get from it.

I can make grass move way. Just testing how this all looks ill mess around and give the whole scene a bit of a better test but iam happy with the results looks like the grass is moving. I might make it a bit more subtle and flowy coz atm it looks like its really windy and i just want it to look like a breeze. Next ill post pictures of my hypershade nodes for the landscape because its a thing of beauty how it all works and its simplicity and awsome ness all in one

Meeting 01

In This meeting I discussed with my personal tutor what I need to be aim for next with my project. What seems clear at this time is I need to come up with a checklist for critiquing 3D and 2D movies in a way that shows the difference between the two. Things that will be used to critique them will be:
Cinematography
When it was made
How much it cost to make if this is available
Quality of the piece
Use of stereoscopics in comparison to 2D
Whether or not the piece was made for the intention of 3D or if it was just added on at the end
How many people went to go see it in 3D compared to how many went to see it in 2D
if any technical problems there might have been with the piece this ties into when it was made
Also who actually made it and the story of the piece will be used to determine how good the piece was.

There will be other things i need to examine just haven't thought of them yet.

Next stage to be done in the project will be Rig the character, model the rest of the environment and start testing the stereo rig further.

I have thought of a few test I can investigate like what happens when you have light in one of the cameras i.e the Left camera and then the shadows in the Right I can also mess around with colours and see if you can mix two colours in poloraisation so that the final outcome is one colour but the two mixes are separate so like if you want green have yellow in one camera and blue in the other.
just a few things that could work if i do this ill need to be very careful and scientific about messing with the colours might be a bit of a pain we shall see. Might just do this test to prove something to myself. No idea what the end result will be with this though.

So ive just done a new render test guess the results are quite nice not sure though i probably need to figure out what i want when using photoshop to do these but actions in photoshop make for swift phtoshoping on each camera for stereo would be a huge pain if i couldnt record each action.

Just a quick side note ive just bought 3 books for my project. first is the art of Avatar

This book has some amazing images and concept art work. Its awsome to see what how they created some of the creatures and it goes into detail about how they actual made the creatures as real as possible by understanding nature and what not. Blah thats a bad discription but I dont care.

Ive also bought 2 tehcnical books for maya MEL Scripting a Character Rig in Maya

and maya animation book for games. Felt like i need these to really get my skills up to scratch and also there is only so much you can learn through mistakes so felt i should really get to understand maya before I leave uni.

oh i also came across this guy Lenny Lipton he is like the mac daddy of stereoscopics and his book on the subject is a free pdf download http://www.lennylipton.com/ youll find a link somewhere on that page to his book.

Well i got bored this morning so this is how far i have gotten in a couple of hours its 8am atm going to keep painting untill 12 then ill go to the hive and test the renders i did last night and see how things look on the big screen. ill update agaian later on.

UV mapped the hair and ive started polypainting her hair in Zbrush. Just getting loadof fine line into it to get it looking like hair bit a a long process i guess. I love painting though so for me this is the most enjoyable bit.

Story

Alura

The words in bold are the stereoscopic camera directions. Parallax refers to the position of an objects relation to the screen if it has a positive it will appear to come out of the screen the opposite applies to the negative. Zero parallax refers to the screen so the object doesn’t go in or out of the screen.

Scene 1:
It's night time the camera opens to a window of a top story flat overlooking a busy metropolitan street. The street lights from below are giving the world an orange glow, everything has an orange/brown tinge.
(High perspective shot showing the street below. The street below will push into the negative parallax and have depth of field blur to highlight the window. The camera will drift slowly in towards the window and straighten up as it enters to give another depth shot going into the window.)
From the outside of the window you see a living room. It looks dark and gloomy. Now inside the living room you can see a black and white movie is showing on the television. It is the classic Little Red Riding Hood. In the middle of the room, sitting on the coffee table is a vase filled with pink flowers.
(The camera will sit at the opening of the window and frame the shot the window will be at the zero parallax and everything else in the room will go into the negative parallax. There will be a one point perspective shot here to make the focus of the shot the girl in the back of the room.)
On the back wall opposite the window, Alura is asleep on the sofa. She has red hair that almost looks like the colour of fire.
(There will be a cut to her sleeping on the sofa and there wont be much in the way of depth here except from the fact that she is 3D.)
Scene 2:
The Camera cuts to her face we see her sleeping. Alura wakes up all of a sudden, as though she has just woken from a terrible nightmare.
(The camera will be sitting at the end of the sofa, and as Alura wakes up she will shoot quickly towards the camera. So she will come from off screen and then moves from negative parallax into the positive, possibly just keep her in the screen space.)
Alura sits up on the sofa and shakes of the dream.
(There will be a cut to her left side so as to get the window and table in the shot. This again will show depth in the shot through the use of overlap and stereoscopy.)
She looks at her feet. One of her shoes is missing, it has fallen of and is resting on the floor beside her. Alura wiggles her toes and lets out a cry of sadness.
(The shoe will be out of focus while the foot will stay in focus as to put focus onto the fact that her shoe has fallen off)
She slips her foot in to the shoe and stands up and makes her way to the window.
(Camera cuts to her putting the shoe back on. Camera cuts back to the shot at the left of her beside the sofa as she gets up and walks across the room.)
Scene 3:
Alura opens the window a cool chill comes in and she lets a shiver ever so slight escape. You can hear the loud traffic from the street below.
(Camera to the right of Alura as she opens the window so that we can see the street from the windows at an angle to the one she is opening.)
Alura climes out the window and sits on the ledge with her feet dangling over the edge.
(cut to a shot outside of the flat angled ever so slightly to catch the fact there are hundreds of flats on the street.)
As Alura looks down and watches the busy world pass her by.
( as she looks down in other shot cut to first person camera of the long drop that she is seeing. There will be a short pause to look at the fact that the street is busy not that she is really up high so the camera will look more closely at the people across the street and the cars zooming past.)
She lets out a quite cry of discontent. Alura shoe slips of her foot and begins to fall swiftly to the street below.
(This is when there will be a dramatic change in the emotion of the character to show she is actually scared of the height of the building by making the perspective and depth even greater than before by pushing the street at the bottom way into the negative parallax.)
The wind beats the shoe back and forth as it falls. Alura franticly reaches out to try and grab the shoe but it's too late, she loses her balance and tumbles after. As Alura falls, the wind brushes past her face. You see just how fast she is falling from the speed of the building passing before her. Camera cuts to a close up of Alura’s face, she gasps and moves her arms to cover her face. She closes her eyes just as she is about to hit the ground.
(The camera will start at the top and see her slip off the edge and then the camera will cut to the bottom of the street and pan down as she is falling. Keep away from doing the obvious shot here of being behind her like a 3rd person computer game would do. Cut to her face and as this shot is complicated the stereoscopy isn’t as clear as other stationary shots might be so this will need to be tested.)

Scene 4:
All of a sudden the screen goes pure white and all the noise from the street before is gone. You hear a bird chirp. Alura moves her arms away from her face and slowly opens her eyes.
(The shot is upside down i.e. Alura is lying on the ground at the top of the screen, and the sky is at the bottom.)
She looks down at the burning bright sun in the sky. She squints at its brightness as she tries to make sense of what has happened. She sees her shoe, reaches for it and puts it on. Just as she realises everything is the wrong way round, it shifts to its correct position. The shift causes a flurry of pink petals from the flower bed she has landed in to be sent in to the air.
(The camera will be upside down from Alura’s point of view. Cut to it upside down looking at her head first showing her lying on her back with her feet at the focal point of a 1 point perspective. The stereoscopic effect will put her feet at the focal point in the picture as it helps to suggest what the next scene is about. The camera will physically rotate to show the fact there was a transition between the two worlds. Camera will cut to petals in the air, this in stereo will be a mixture of positive parallax and negative parallax so should be quite effective at making the beauty of the scene even more beautiful.)
Alura slowly stands up and takes in the magnificent view of this strange world.
(Camera will be positioned behind her as she gets up will rise to show a vista view over the hill the arrangement of character in the zero parallax and the hills at a mid negative and the view in the infinite parallax should make for a striking shot.)

Scene 5:
The petals caught in the wind flow around Alura’s head as if trying to get her attention. They glide away in the wind beckoning Alura to follow on a journey through this wonderful new world.
(This shot will start with the petals in front and behind the screen and you will be able to see Alura behind them out of focus, They will then tunnel towards her rotating while they float towards her. The camera will then stay stationary while she turns in the flowers. They then move off and she follows.)

Scene 6:
The petals take Alura over the rolling hillsides and in to a forest. Alura tries to keep up with the petals not that they are moving to fast, there are just so many things to see. Alura walks between trees and over fallen ones as she follows.
(Camera will follow her from the side as she runs over the hills and fly round her to the other side. The camera will cut to see the petals fly directly past the camera some will come out of the positive parallax, she will the follow behind. The camera will then cut to see her in a forest walking between the trees at this point the trees will get denser and thicker as she walks the same path as the petals. The trees will give a nice effect in stereo as there overlap and position to one another is a normal depth cue this will then be improved with stereo. It will also start to make the scene appear to become more sinister as you wont as the forest will get darker and thicker as she progresses.)

Scene 7:
The forest begins to get darker and the trees get closer together. She now has to move branches out of the way to pass. All the while the petals move easily almost as if they know where they are going.
(Again this will just be a continuation in the shot but there will be cuts of her pushing branches aside to deepen the suggestion she is going somewhere she shouldn’t.)

Scene 8:
The forest has now gotten so dense and dark that she can no longer see the petals. Alura stops to look for them. So she can try and see which way they went. Alura hears something behind her and turns swiftly just in time to catch a glimpse of two red eyes before they are gone.
(The Camera will rotate around her as she walks a few paces looking high and low and all around. The effect in stereo should be quite confusing to the sense’s which is kind of what were going for here although the shot will need to be tested as there are cases where certain motions don’t work in stereo . The camera will then stop rotating and then cut to a piece of the woods quickly and then back to her face.)
All she can see now is the moving branches from where the creature was standing. Alura now overcome by a sense of danger begins to run. All the while unbeknownst to her the creature with red eyes is following.
( the camera will be looking straight at her while she is looking behind herself, as she starts to turn and run we will see the look in her face of fear and horror.)

Scene 9:
Running faster and faster through the forest she suddenly comes to a dead-end at the edge of a gushing waterfall. As a result from her sudden stop so she would not fall over the edge, causes her shoe to fall over the edge.
(The camera will then cut from her running in the forest to a high shot showing the edge of the cliff and the ground below it, the stereo effect should help distinguish that it is a cliff and that it is really high up.)
The shoe falls in the same manner as it did before. The wind beating it back and forth. She looks down to watch it fall and she slowly looks up to see that it is now night time and in the distance this world is burning. It is consumed by fire and the sky glows an angry red. Alura looks scared.
(Repeat the initial shoe shot again but in new environment. Camera then cuts to her side as she pears over the edge. Camera cuts to her face. Camera looks at what she is looking at.)

Scene 10:
Suddenly you hear a growl come from behind Alura. She turns swiftly to see that the creature with red eyes is wolf with the purest of black fur. You see it's razor sharp teeth as it growls and saliva drips from it mouth as it stands staring at it prey.
( Camera cuts to Alura (head shot) who then turns quickly. Camera cuts to close up of wolfs face.)

Scene 11:
You now see Alura more afraid than ever.
(Cut to a close up of her eye).
In the reflection of her eye you can see the pink petals spell out (WAKE UP) backwards. In slow motion still through the reflection of Alura’s eye you see the wolf with red eyes jump through the petals causing them to disperse. Alura closes her eyes and takes a step backwards over the edge of the waterfall. She falls.
(The eye will sit on the zero parallax with the black part receding into the negative. The reflection will also sit on the zero. Then the shadow of the wolf will jump through the into the positive parallax. She then falls away from the camera. Cut to shot of her falling over the cliff edge.)

Scene 12:
Back in the living room Alura wakes up all of a sudden, as though she has just woken from a terrible nightmare. Alura sits up on the sofa and shakes of the dream. She looks at her feet. One of her shoes is missing, it has fallen of and is resting on the floor beside her. Alura wiggles her toes and smiles.
(Close up of her face as she wakes up. Cut to foot of sofa and she gets up. Cut to the bottom of her foot her face will be in shot but in the negative parallax and out of focus. Cut to her face.)

quick update got my renders done and woo it works i think going to test all of the stuff tomorrow in the HIVE fingers crossed this stuff really dose what i hope it will do

Just working on the next test ill need to do i need to uv mapp and texture for the next stage but so far its looking like it will be good

First this is a test so its in red and blue because i havent renered out the left and righ images yet. After playing with the camera iam happy with the controls but moving the camera isnt too good at times it dose strange things.

Just a bit more done on the tree going to make this leaf thing as messy and stop taking so much care over it ill then link the leafs up with branches instead of truing to do it the other way around because that isnt working out too well. Oh thats why I havent made the tree an adaptive skin yet and not sculpted it either. Polygon count is staying in the low areas still but figured i can always just use the desimation master to get really low model because the leafs are going to be static object no need for any topology.

This tree is just going to take awhile ive decided ill keep the leafs seperate so when in maya I can bring them in when i render to save my polygon count whilst running the program just to not overwhelm maya.

Untill i try to do this is another idea iam just going to say screw the poly count its not a game after all, however i will need to be careful not to do huge polygon counts just be clever when setting up the shots ect i feel that give it another day and ill mabye figure out this zproject stuff but untill then iam just going to cover the tree in leafs to see how it could look.

I thought of a way to make low poly leafes fro zbrush going to test it and note the results this picture is what iam going to try to morph onto a plane using projection in theory i can keep it kinda low whilst still looking like leafs. If this dosent work then oh well. this subtool of leafs is around 30k polygons so not much chance iam going to make a whole tree never mind a few dozen with hundreds of leaves on it. I know there are other ways to do this but because of doing a stereo animation it need to be all 3D as a flat surface will not work so blarg going to tair my hair out for a few days trying to get this to work.

Almost ready to sculpt the details onto the model i havent textured it just using a matcap to give it a cell shading look while modeling to see where shadows will be cast. I like the look at present but ill add leaves before doing the main sculpt on the bark and what not. Felt like a bit of a change from the main model ill probably get back to it tomorrow after class.

just a bit more done after a quick nap. next ill need to create the overall shape of the tree the build as many branches as possible re-topologising this is going to be fun .LOL :(

ok after a quick break and this is as far as ive gotten with the tree ill modle the leaf as a sperate sub tool and then make them rather low poly ie like 6 or 8 polys and then duplicate them about a hundred times to cover the tree with leaves ill see how much polys i can squeze out of the mesh once iam done to get some really good low poly trees for the animation. However i havent a clue how to uv a tree going to be fun :)

just a quick armature for a tree once ive built all of the branches in the armature ill save it out just as a zsphere so i can go back in and move around things to get varation in the trees for the animation this so far has taken like 20 mins of work if that I heart zbrush for its speed.

before i go to bed i thought id post this quick painting of the hair to get an idea of the colour ill use in the model ill try to do the rest at some point tomorrow real quick. 3.54am atm so bed too much work!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so ive modeled the feet and given them some basic shape. Almost finished got to find a way to reduce the poly count on the clothes without losing the detail for some reson its kinda hard oh well. Now that the feet and hands are in and the right size i can now uv mapp after i quickly give the feet good topology that will flow into the lrg because at present its bad. At present the high rez version is aroung 1mil polygons been batteling all of today to ruduce it to this from 24mil but that was kinda my own fault for having high sub divides on things that didnt need them. Tomorrow i might make a low poly mesh in maya for the clothing and see how that goes. So all that is left is to get a low mesh for the clothes which is a seperate model come up with some sort of shoes think ill just use something like pumps that girls wear atm. Then uv map and the texture slam on the normal map and then rig. Hopefully ill have a test render by some time around wednessday for her.

Ok so this is where i am at done the clothes not sure if iam happy with them or not but ill mabye concept some other ideas over the top of my base mesh to see what might look goo. Think i need to match the hair with some sort of big collar or some thing like that to balance out the character going to mess around see what happens.

Ok so ive managed to combine the head to the body but this meant re doing the topology (sucks) next export into maya and build some hands real quick sculpt then move onto the clothes. If i get bored i can texture her and could try building the rig as once ive done the hands thats me done with her mesh. going to try out motion builder and see if its better for animating in. need my 2nd screen up and running to get the next stages done.

ok so ive blocked out the body i had done the hands but they are terrible so iam going to attempt them again. The feet will need considerable work i might just model the feet on there own so i can have a nice high poly for the shots and rig it well

So after fixing the hairs topology the model on a good resolution is 51k polygons way, But its around 30k when in lowest resolution for normal maps which i guess iam happy with as maya will only handle around 3mil polygons before grinding to a halt.
So for the rest of today ill try to sort the body out only way i can think of doing this is to take the low head into maya and then create a seemed body from the heads topology. Not sure if that actually meant anything but oh well i know what i mean. Its early and ive not slept forgive me.

Lol she looks like the hulk in that one. But on a more serious note spent today learning how to repotologies in Zbrush so did her face got the hair left to do and then the nightmare of the body to do.

The next step is to model the hair then go build the body. The face looks slightly off because of the skull and the ear is a bit far back but the hair will cover up most of these mistakes. After this steps ill need to texture her and then the horrible part the rigging.

I think i have decided that i will want to make a cell shaded animation however this will take an added few steps in the rendering side of things so ill need to take that into account when writing up my gannt chart. ok so ive just done a quick bump map for the building to see if it give the right effect for the stone walls i could use a normal map but think its a bit over kill for this however i need to see if it works in stereo projection shouldnt be any problem and if their is then i can do the normal mapp simple. After talking with Brian about my project we arrived at the idea of seeing how stereoscopic affects the audeinces emotions and how this is portrayed in stereoscopics?

I need to refine the question alot so it makes sense but iam going to investigate how stereo can induce things like fear, vertigo, happiness, sadness and other forms of emotion. I will also be critiquing movies to understand were they are using things that can affect people and looking at the things which people find annoying and seeing if they cant be used in a better way.

To sum up I want to look at stereo to be used as a tool not a gimmick in films.

I found a book about 3-D films, Its quite interesting and a few things i really didn't know. There was a point in the 1950 when 50 movies were made within a year that were all stereoscopic as well as this there was a huge boom in stereoscopic pornography.

I will read more of this book for the history of the booms that stereoscopics has gone through because a lot of public opinion is that the boom that is just starting may just be a gimmick. However it is clear in this book that the reasons for stereoscopics failing in the past was due to sloppy cinematography and poor projection techniques, and now technology has caught up with cinema and stereo can really be appreciated for what it is.

Today I had a meeting with Kenneth Scott-Brown to do with stereo vision and using the hive to demonstrate my work in stereoscopics. He posed a good question for me to look into the role stereoscopics has in narrative. He also proposed a test that I could perform to achieve this by making a linear animation and one that was directed to see if stereo is more affective in certain shots or if its better just from the users point of view. Basically is stereo more effective for the single user i.e computer games or is it better in film for multiple users.

My idea so far would be an action sequence for a game and a movie by just changing the use of cameras to achieve this wont add too much to my pipeline but will give me two results which could be tested.

Things that I could look into is still the same in cinematography as well as layout and depth perception but also this helps me to narrow my question down a lot as ill be able to look specifically at certain things within cinematography for use within film and games.

Single user experience i.e computer games would probably be the more effective use of stereoscopics but there isn't any reason this cant be used to some degree within film like when the camera changes point of view, this would give the audience a better sense that it is them who is actually there. This could be strengthened by making other shots not in stereo to give the audience a visual Que that point of view has changed.

Other things which cropped up were things to do with using stereo for the sake of using it and not using it as a visual language aid.

Using stereo to re-enforce artistic value of a shot or even mess with the idea of depth using stereo to add confusion maybe or an idea of hallucination.

Autostereoscopy is a method of displaying three-dimensional images that can be viewed without the use of special headgear or glasses on the part of the user. These methods produce depth perception in the viewer even though the image is produced by a flat device.

Several technologies exist for autostereoscopic 3D displays. Currently most of such flat-panel solutions are using lenticular lenses or parallax barrier. If the viewer positions his or her head in certain viewing positions, he or she will perceive a different image with each eye, giving a stereo image. Consequently, eye strain and headaches are usual side effects of long viewing exposure to autostereoscopic displays that use lenticular lens or parallax barriers. Such displays can have multiple viewing zones allowing multiple users to view the image at the same time.

Other displays use eye tracking systems to automatically adjust the two displayed images to follow viewers' eyes as they move their heads.

Well i think that the fact that prelonged expsoure to these screens give you headaches isnt a very good sign as they probably want these in everyones homes in 10 years or so like they did with HD tvs.

I was thinking today that from what Ive read on people experiences of s-3D films people can get motion sickness from certain parts of a film done in s-3D this might be due to fast passed camera shots or jerky camera. However this is just a thought there might be something similar to uncanny valley happening with s-3D films in the way that if the illusion isn't natural then we as the viewer feel physically ill as the illusion realise on our own stereo vision there could be something cinematographers are missing.

I looked up the cause of motion sickness,

"The most common hypothesis for the cause of motion sickness is that it functions as a defense mechanism against neurotoxin. The area posterma in the brain is responsible for inducing vomiting when poisons are detected, and for resolving conflicts between vision and balance. When feeling motion but not seeing it (for example, in a ship with no windows), the inner ear transmits to the brain that it senses motion, but the eyes tell the brain that everything is still. As a result of the disconcordance, the brain will come to the conclusion that one of them is hallucinating and further conclude that the hallucination is due to poison ingestion. Layout for animation is another area which iam needing to look into so I am going to get out the drawing board and start to remember my graphic communication classes from high school and do some 1 point and two point perspective drawings to just research into what i could maybe use in stereo.

So today I've done a lot of research into how to create the imagery for my outcome. Ive learnt that just making the outcome wont be so easily done i have to figure out which areas will come out from the screen and what will appear to go behind the viewing plane and then how these scenes will move. If I don't plan this out well then ill have issues pop up as i do the work. However the problem of occlusion only apply to the images that pop out from the screen. I can maybe work around this with other techniques but I think i need to witness a s3D film like avatar when it comes out to really understand the best way to use stereo imagery.

So Ive started 4th year and I am looking into doing something in stereoscopics, Atm Ive been looking at things like mad world and sin city for some ideas to how i might like my animation to look. Also looking at things like street fighter because i really like the cell shaded look. I have also been looking at noir art from depthcore.com some really nice stuff.
